**Lesson Plan: Basic Shapes**
**Class:** Reception (4-5 years old)
**Subject:** Art
**Lesson Topic:** Basic Shapes
**Duration:** 45 minutes
**Objective:**
- To introduce students to basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle).
- To help students recognise and name these shapes.
- To encourage creativity by incorporating shapes into artwork.
**Materials Required:**
- Large flashcards with pictures of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle).
- Different coloured construction paper.
- Child-safe scissors.
- Glue sticks.
- Crayons, markers, or coloured pencils.
- Pre-cut shapes in different sizes and colours.
- A4 white paper.
**Lesson Procedure:**
1. **Introduction (10 minutes):**
- Greet the students warmly and have them sit in a circle.
- Introduce the topic of the day: Basic Shapes.
- Show each shape flashcard to the class and name them:
- Circle
- Square
- Triangle
- Rectangle
- Encourage the children to repeat the names of the shapes after you.
2. **Shape Hunt (10 minutes):**
- Explain to the students that they will go on a shape hunt around the classroom.
- Ask them to look around the room and point out objects that match the shapes they've just learned. For example, a clock for a circle, a book for a rectangle, etc.
- As they identify objects, reinforce the shape names and praise their observations.
3. **Shape Craft Activity (20 minutes):**
- Have the students sit at their tables.
- Distribute pre-cut shapes and A4 white paper to each student.
- Instruct the students to create a picture using the shapes. They can build houses, cars, flowers, or anything their imagination allows.
- Encourage students to glue the shapes onto the paper to form their picture.
- Provide crayons, markers, or coloured pencils for any additions or details they wish to add.
4. **Show and Tell (5 minutes):**
- Gather the students back in a circle.
- Ask each student to show their artwork and tell the class which shapes they used.
- Offer encouragement and positive feedback for each presentation.
5. **Conclusion (5 minutes):**
- Recap the lesson by reviewing the shapes once more.
- Ask the students what their favourite shape is and why.
- Thank the students for their participation and creativity.
**Assessment:**
- Observe the students during the shape hunt and craft activity to see if they can correctly identify and use the shapes.
- Listen to their explanations during the show and tell to determine their understanding of the shapes.
**Differentiation:**
- Provide additional support and one-on-one assistance to students who may struggle with identifying or naming shapes.
- Offer more complex shapes or patterning activities for advanced students.
**Follow-up Activities:**
- Repeat the lesson with different shapes or combine the shapes to form more complex images.
- Integrate shapes into other subjects, such as arranging shapes to form letters or numbers.
By the end of the lesson, students should have a basic understanding of common shapes and be able to incorporate them into simple artworks.
